1972 to present             Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel. Emeritus Professor since October 2006.

 

 

Appointments

Appointment to the rank of Senior Lecturer since October, 1973. Previous appointment had been on the terms of Senior Lecturer. Tenure since October, 1973. Appointment to the rank of Associate Professor since April, 1979. Appointment to the rank of Professor since April, 1985. The incumbent of the Conrad Abrahams and Chinita Curiel Chair in Electronic Instrumentation since January, 1988. Professor emeritus since October 2006.

 

 

Teaching Activities

Taught several courses, amongst them: Graduate courses on "Selected Topics in Electronic Systems and Networks," and on "Magnetic Systems," and on "Electrical Machines." Undergraduate courses: “Electromagnetic Devices”, “Electronic Instrumentation”, “Principles of Measurement Theory”, “Electromagnetic Fields”, “Transmission Lines and Distributed Systems”, “Dynamic Systems”, “Antennas”.

 

Academic responsibility for “The Frederick and Alice Kotek Laboratory for Magnetic and Electronic Systems.”, where he supervises Doctorate, Master and Fourth year Project students.

                          

 

                           Administrative Activities

Has recently served as one of the two Comptrollers of the Israeli committee of URSI. General responsibility for "The Frederick and Alice Kotek Laboratory for Magnetic and Electronic Systems. Served as a member of the Departmental Committee for Service Courses. Served as a member of the departmental appointment committee.

 

Participated in several administrative duties, amongst them: Membership in the Faculty of Engineering Science committees for Teaching, General Studies, and in the Budget Committee. Served as a member of the Faculty of Engineering Science Committee for Selecting Senior Visitors.  Membership in several departmental committees. Served in 1997 as chairman of the search committee for electing a new departmental head.   Served frequently in the      departmental teaching committee, and was its chairman. Was head of the departmental committee for graduate studies. Was head of the departmental external relations committee. Was head of the departmental graduate-bulletin committee. Was member of the departmental seminar committee. Served several times as an advisor to graduate and undergraduate students. Was delegate of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences in the Meetings of the general assembly of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Was delegate of the University Senate to the appointments committee of the Ben-Gurion University Applied Research Institute. Served twice for double terms as a member of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences Appointments Committee.

 

 

Research Activities

His main research activity is in the field of Magnetic and Electronic Systems and Instrumentation. Investigated and continues to investigate systems for magnetic levitation, oscillations in electromechanical systems, parametric oscillations, sensors for translations and vibrations, theory of precise oscillators, nonlinear oscillations, coupled oscillator systems, chaotic oscillations, periodic function generators, simplified modelling of synchronous generators, magnetic liquids, non-destructive testing of ferromagnetic materials, magnetometry, development of magnetometers employing nonlinear ferromagnetic materials, viewing magnetometers in the light of antenna theory, electric field sensors (especially ULF and DC sensors) and associating them with antenna theory, Employment of magnetometry for searching hidden ferromagnetic objects, The duality that relates magnetic noise to electric shot noise and its possible applications (Possible relationship to nanotechnology).

A research grant for investigating digital oscillators models. Donated by the Fund for the Encouragement of Education and Research in areas related to computers, 1979.

 

A University Fund research grant for studying simplified models of Synchronous Machines, 1982.

 

A contract with the National Research and Development Council to comprehensively review the field of Magnetic Liquids, 1982/83. Half of an engineer salary was paid for a year through this contract.

 

A research grant of $500.- monthly for five years, in effect from November, 1983, for studying "multiphase oscillators." Donated by a benefactor in Lausanne.

 

Obtained a travel grant of $1500.- from IEEE Magnetic Society on behalf of Mr. Raoul Rabinovici to attend the INTERMAG conference in Tokyo, 1987.

 

A contract with the National Research and Development Council to study "Nondestructive Stress Evaluation of Ferromagnetic Materials by Magnetic Methods." Financed by the NRDC together with the European Community: $40,000.- for 1988/89. Dr. Raoul Rabinovici is an associate investigator. A continuation of the project, with a budget of $41,500.- for a second academic year, was promised. The project was discontinued by Kaplan and Rabinovici as a result of difficulties in obtaining a university appointment for Dr. Rabinovici.

 

A research and teaching grant of $1,000.- donated by the Ivanier Robotics Centre, 1994.
